The fiercely competitive world of French beauty pageants is not known for sparking philosophical debate between Catholic bishops and politicians, let alone a threatened uprising on an exotic ocean island. But the pre-Christmas contest for Miss France 2008 has caused a row over blasphemy, race and ancient colonial prejudice after it emerged that the winner once posed in a bikini as Jesus on a crucifix.

Miss World's swimsuits and high-heels may be seen as passé in Britain, but across the channel the Miss France competition is a festive institution attracting about 10 million viewers in a three-hour prime time TV show.

This month a panel of sporting and showbiz celebrities, aided by a public vote, gave the crown to Valérie Bègue, 22, a mixed race business student from the Indian Ocean island, Réunion. She returned to a hero's welcome by the 800,000 inhabitants of the island off Madagascar, which, like Guadeloupe and Martinique, is considered as much part of France as the Côte d'Azur. The first Réunion islander to be voted Miss France since 1978, Begue spoke of "diversity and tolerance" and celebrated the anniversary of the end of slavery.

But the mood soured when photographs taken three years ago were sold to a French magazine last week showing Bègue posing as Christ on a crucifix in a pink bikini. Other pictures showed her eating yogurt in a suggestive manner.

WASHINGTON—After decades spent battling gender discrimination and inequality in the workplace, the feminist movement underwent a high-level shake-up last month, when 53-year-old management consultant Peter "Buck" McGowan took over as new chief of the worldwide initiative for women's rights.

Oh, it gets even better...

"All the feminist movement needed to do was bring on someone who had the balls to do something about this glass ceiling business," said McGowan, who quickly closed the 23.5 percent gender wage gap by "making a few calls to the big boys upstairs." "In the world of gender identity and empowered female sexuality, it's all about who you know."

"With a charismatic, self-assured guy like Pete pulling the strings, we might even see a female elected president one of these days," said Nathan Roth, an analyst at the Cato Institute. "Finally, the feminist movement has a face that commands respect."

McGowan, however, said he didn't get into the business of women's rights for the praise.

"What these women were able to accomplish with the little manpower they had is very impressive," McGowan said. "I just bring a certain something to the table—I'm not sure what—that gave us that extra little push into complete female independence. I guess it just comes naturally."

DUNCANVILLE, Texas (AP) -- The most popular address on Cedar Ridge Drive is Jim Trulock's split-level home, which has a group sex room and attracts as many as 100 people to swinger parties featuring "Naked Twister" nights.

But the festivities could soon be over. In response to neighbors' complaints, the city has outlawed sex clubs in residential areas. Citations have been issued, and search warrants may be next.

"It's crazy that they want to force their morality down our throats," said Dawn Burton, 45, a regular guest at the parties. "We're all frustrated."

So are those who complain of the noise, traffic and parking problems that occur in their otherwise quiet, upscale neighborhood every Friday and Saturday, when Trulock's home is transformed into "The Cherry Pit."

Duncanville, which proclaims itself "The Perfect Blend of Family, Community and Business," is an unlikely venue for a neighborhood swinger club. The city of 36,000 just southwest of Dallas has about 50 places of worship and not a single registered sexually oriented business.

Duncanville officials insist they are not just another prudish Texas town giving the boot to spouse-swappers. They say it all boils down to a matter of law: Trulock is operating a business featuring live sex acts.

"It's not trying to judge anyone or pass judgment on someone's lifestyle," city spokeswoman Tonya Lewis said.

To support its claim, the city notes that the Cherry Pit accepts money from guests and promotes the parties on its Web site.

"We're not about infringing on the rights of the Cherry Pit patrons or owners," Lewis said. "But now your right to have fun has infringed on everyone else's. And now you have to draw the line."

Page Three girls have been central to the success of the soaraway Sun, becoming a peculiarly British tradition in the process. But their introduction was risky, and their survival never completely assured.

Sun editor Larry Lamb made his big gamble on 17 November 1970, when his proprietor Rupert Murdoch was safely out of the country.

It was a year since Murdoch's second relaunch of a title that was already attacked by its critics for being obsessed with sex.

Up until then, the Sun's new Page Three girls had kept their clothes on. But with Murdoch away, Lamb decided to boost the Sun's sexual content further and Stephanie Rahn, a 20-year-old German, became the first of its models to take her top off.

Lamb had no idea how women readers or the newspaper's distributors would react.

Legend has it that Murdoch was incandescent with rage when he saw the first bare breasts to grace his title. But the subsequent rise in paper sales - 1.5 million to 2.1 million in a year - rather soothed him.

Travellers face price hikes and confusion after the Government unveiled plans to take up to 53 pieces of information from anyone entering or leaving Britain.

For every journey, security officials will want credit card details, holiday contact numbers, travel plans, email addresses, car numbers and even any previous missed flights.

The information, taken when a ticket is bought, will be shared among police, customs, immigration and the security services for at least 24 hours before a journey is due to take place.

Anybody about whom the authorities are dubious can be turned away when they arrive at the airport or station with their baggage.

Those with outstanding court fines, such as a speeding penalty, could also be barred from leaving the country, even if they pose no security risk.

The information required under the "e-borders" system was revealed as Gordon Brown announced plans to tighten security at shopping centres, airports and ports.

Vatican archive yields Templar secrets

The Knights Templar, a military order of the Roman Catholic Church, are back in the news again, almost 700 years after they were suppressed by papal edict.

They were originally formed to protect Christians in the Holy Land during the early Crusades.

The Templars are the stuff of legend, and their exploits have provided the plots for many films and popular novels.

The Knights, who wore a distinctive white mantle decorated with a red cross, became very wealthy, owned property all over Europe and the Middle East, and started up a primitive international banking system.

They caused deep controversy, even in their own time. They helped to finance wars waged by several European monarchs.

Some believe the Templars were the custodians of the fabled Holy Grail.

Disentangling fact and fiction about them is difficult.

In France, a Grand Master of the Order and other knights were burned alive by order of King Philip IV, after the Order was accused of heresy, blasphemy and sexual misconduct.

Today is the first day of the Fall. I can feel it as I smoke the day’s last cigarette on the back step. There is a chill in the air. It’s slowly raining bit fat drops that must weigh a pound a piece. They are coming out of the sky, coming down the mountain, like anvils, thudding into the turning leaves and the saturated ground. I can feel a beast stepping out of the forest, its head peaking out above the tree tops and glaring at me. With every increasingly hurried step towards me, as it comes crashing down the side of the hill and leaps over the Green Building to land in front of me, it is pushing down trees and leaving huge gaping holes in the ground where it's feet impact. And I stare into the abyss.

Augie March - One Crowded Hour

Update: Ride that pony again.

Quick, write it all down before forget. Go out on the back steps again if you must. I got about 4 hours sleep last night. Better than most. I went to work at the usual time. Left out the door at 5:15 am. Got off work, again, at the usual time, 2:45pm. Drove from Rochester to Ft Drum, and then back home. I pushed through all that time to be here. I put the kids to bed and fell asleep on the couch. And woke up to my estranged wife kissing me like she hadn’t in years—if not months.

But she was just fucking with me I think. As soon as we started getting into it she got that smile on her face and got up. That was it. Now it’s been hours and I still can’t sleep. But it’s nice on the back step. After the record breaking heat of the day it’s a paradise with a gentile breeze out here on the back step. The street lights show the trees in an underwater way. It’s beautiful, really.

But not as beautiful as seeing her sprawled out on the couch. She looks thinner and sexier than she has in 5 years. But it still feels like there is nothing there or that everything is still there hanging over us. One or the other. But it’s all here on the back steps. Air conditioner roaring like a freight train, insects straining to be heard above. The breeze asking if we still trip like they do. Underwater scenery along the back fence. The dried and withered garden almost looks alive in this light.

The air sure smells better than Rochester.

There’s a little black book with my cds in it. Actually it’s rather large and over sized. There are pin holes in my cds. There are scratches and scraps on most of them. They skip like my memories. There is mold on some of the pages and there is sand in between others. Again, just like my faded memories.

I raced through traffic, through the summer night’s construction. Just to get food. Just because I know I’m suppose to eat. There is a blonde junkie on the tee vee and she reminds me of her. She reminds me of me. But I’m a special junkie because I’m high on life. Whatever.

But I remember that trailer. I remember that long ago place called the 90’s. I remember a flurry of blonde hair and bare shoulders and hot moist kisses. Right there on that couch, in that same spot some 12 or 13 years ago. And then I remember last month. On a new couch, in the same spot. This time she was 20 instead of 16, and I was 30 instead of 18. Only this time we didn’t end up fucking on the bathroom floor.

This time is different. This here and now. The trailer was the same, but it was in a different park. Just like this America. But it never really was any different; me, America, or any other goddamn thing. It’s just a matter of perspective. Waking up to reality, with it’s ever shifting fucking side-winding quality.

So what if I turn a trick or two, I do it for you. Just because I don’t even know who I am any more doesn’t mean any less. Doesn’t mean I’m lost.

It really wasn't minimalist enough around here.

So this is how I'm going to start this off. I need this place right now. I need its anonymity. I'm not here to fill in the back story. I'm here to channel something that is going on right now.

Turn the volume all the way down. You can't hear what's going on with that shit blaring anyways. What is it? Reality? Reality looks an awful lot like a hotel room with no personality. The summer is slipping by. Green will give way to brown as it always does. Our time is worthless. It all happens in a second and then it's over. You are reliving it all right now.

Some where in the future in a hospital bed, a ditch, the bathtub, your last seconds slip by and your whole life is flashing before your eyes. Everyday I drive over this bridge on the way to work. Shortly after the Minnesota Bridge collapse, rumor start to travel around that this particular bridge was of the same age and design as that bridge over there. Tomorrow morning I'm going to roll over it once again, as I will tomorrow afternoon, and imagine, no remember, what it was like to go down my first roller coaster. You know, from the high part, the part that really grabbed you testicles. I'm going to have that feeling right there. AT the same time I'm going to see, as if it were real, the water open up before me, the jet skies skipping by, the boats, docked, the small whitish caps on one and a half foot waves. I'm going to remember doing all of this in a flash on my deaths bed, and my heart won’t skip a beat.

MURPHY, Texas — A sting in which police teamed up with "Dateline NBC" to catch online pedophiles was supposed to send a flinty-eyed, Texas-style warning about this Dallas suburb: Don't mess with Murphy.

Instead, it has turned into a fiasco.

One of the 25 men caught in the sting — a prosecutor from a neighboring county — committed suicide when police came to arrest him. The Murphy city manager who approved the operation lost his job in the ensuing furor.

And the district attorney is refusing to prosecute any of the men, saying many of the cases were tainted by the involvement of amateurs.

"Certainly these people should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, but the fact that this was all done for television cameras raises some questions," said Mayor Bret Baldwin.

To some the idea of posting risque pictures of women on a blog that somewhat focuses on politics, culture and religion may seem a crass bid at scoring some easy hits...and it is. That is not the only reason, however. Before I go on, let me relate here the story of The Original Snub:

Rules 'hiding' trillions in debt

The federal government recorded a $1.3 trillion loss last year — far more than the official $248 billion deficit — when corporate-style accounting standards are used, a USA TODAY analysis shows.

The loss reflects a continued deterioration in the finances of Social Security and government retirement programs for civil servants and military personnel. The loss — equal to $11,434 per household — is more than Americans paid in income taxes in 2006.

"We're on an unsustainable path and doing a great disservice to future generations," says Chris Chocola, a former Republican member of Congress from Indiana and corporate chief executive who is pushing for more accurate federal accounting.

Modern accounting requires that corporations, state governments and local governments count expenses immediately when a transaction occurs, even if the payment will be made later.

The federal government does not follow the rule, so promises for Social Security and Medicare don't show up when the government reports its financial condition.

Bottom line: Taxpayers are now on the hook for a record $59.1 trillion in liabilities, a 2.3% increase from 2006. That amount is equal to $516,348 for every U.S. household. By comparison, U.S. households owe an average of $112,043 for mortgages, car loans, credit cards and all other debt combined.

I’m curious –what kind of household and what kind of parents have a child grow up to post porn? First off, because the world revolves around whatever definition is in vogue at the time...

Here is a first, simple definition. Pornography is any material (either pictures or words) that is sexually explicit. This definition of pornography may pick out different types of material in different contexts, since what is viewed as sexually explicit can vary from culture to culture and over time. "Sexually explicit" functions as a kind of indexical term, picking out different features depending on what has certain effects or breaks certain taboos in different contexts and cultures. Displays of women's uncovered ankles count as sexually explicit in some cultures, but not in most western cultures nowadays (although they once did: the display of a female ankle in Victorian times was regarded as most risqué). There may be borderline cases too: do displays of bared breasts still count as sexually explicit in various contemporary western cultures? However, some material seems clearly to count as sexually explicit in many contexts today: in particular, audio, written or visual representations of sexual acts (e.g., sexual intercourse, oral sex) and exposed body parts (e.g., the vagina, anus and penis-especially the erect penis).

Makes one wonder to whom you may have been addressing with, "what kind of parents have a child grow up to post porn?" Do you see any images depicting sexual intercourse, oral sex, vaginae, balloon knots, or erect penises, decorating my website? Barely a nipple.

What I'd like to know is what kind family you grew up in--what kind of parents you had, dear reader--that nudity is judged to be a bad thing. I'm glad my parents never transfered their sexual hang-ups (if they had any) unto me. I'm also glad they sufficiently instilled the lesson to not be hypocritical about being judgmental.

No matter what your faith, be it science, or religion, there is always some pope trying to defining everything.

Even something as basic as speech is nothing more than sand slipping between the fingers. We agree stop means stop, fuck means fuck, we hold these truths to be self evident. But stop can mean go and fuck can mean suck, and all we have to do is agree to make it so.

We’ve been dogged by knowledge, dragged down by insight, we have no other comfort but in the refuge of dusty old quotes and the meanings we can attribute to them.

Busy campaigning for his presidential bid, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has missed over 40 consecutive roll-call votes, going five straight weeks “without casting a vote on the Senate floor.”

Yesterday, after apparently skipping most of the extended closed-door White House/Senate immigration negotiations, McCain “suddenly re-emerged” to take part in the press conference announcing the deal.

This isn’t sitting well with McCain’s colleagues. Tonight, Fox News correspondent Major Garrett reported that “anger burst forth memorably and loudly” when Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) accused McCain of being “too busy running for president.” McCain responded by using “the f-word toward Cornyn,” though it’s not clear “if the f-word was a verb or a gerund.”

There was a time--a period that roughly paralleled the Clinton Presidency--that I didn't give a shit about politics. Well, that's not exactly accurate. I was young and naive enough to believe that the Raygun Revolution was a brief speed bump on the road to the realization of the American Dream.

Then came the Bush 2000 fiasco, and the following six years.

Needless to say I was radicalized. I won't go into the personal details. I did that on my last blog and that lead to a dead end. I was lefter than left...or something. Protested the RNC in 04' and several other large events of a similar nature. I was still under the impression that I lived in the Democracy they taught about in grade school.

Now I'm not sure what I believe. If I believe in anything at all.
